A Double acting cylinders are equipped with the Hydraulic Port at each ends of the cylinder through which the hydraulic fluid is supplied in for both Retraction and Extension of the Piston rod assembly. This type of cylinders are used when an external force is not available to retract the piston or when significantly high force is necessary during both the stroke travel.

A single-acting hydraulic cylinder includes just one port. This is where the hydraulic fluid enters and forces the plunger out in one direction. Used in simple lifting applications where fast retraction is not essential.

These are employed in applications that needs a compact retracted dimension but a lengthier stroke. These are single acting type hydraulic cylinders that have 2 to 5 stages of Extension.
